The Prayers for Rain

Dong ethnic people living in Southeastern China still retain customs and practices that have been passed down for centuries. A significant amount of those valuable intangible cultural heritage (arts, dialects, recipies, etc.) is disappearing due to rapid urbanization and the influx of young people in cities.

My work revolves around a day of a Dong village’s townsfolks’ most important festival of the year— “Speaking to the Heaven,” a traditional sacrificial ritual to pray for the rain and prosperity from their god “Lei Po.” The video recorded the lives of the local elderly and children left behind in the village. I hope these traditional customs, religious rituals, and music recorded in my videos can arouse the awareness of preserving and invigorating the vanishing cultural heritage.
